PROVO, UT – The BYU Department of Political Science is proud to announce the launch of the BYU Political Affairs Society (BYUPAS), a networking organization to help alumni and friends connect around the globe.
“BYU faculty and alumni have been working hard over the past year to set the Society in motion,” said Darren Hawkins, department chairman and chair of the BYUPAS Board of Directors. “It’s my belief that the Society will become a resource that benefits the BYU community. I strongly encourage students, alumni and faculty to become involved in some way with the Society.”
BYUPAS is the official BYU alumni organization dedicated to serving students, alumni, faculty and friends of the University who have interests in applied politics. The Society aims to serve its members through becoming the number one resource for alumni with interests in campaign management, government affairs, federal and state governance, and many other applied political disciplines. From veteran politicos to casual observers, BYUPAS members run the gamut of political involvement.
“The purpose of the Society is to better connect its members to the political world,” said Cory Martin, BYUPAS national president. “The Society encourages its members to be involved in their community. Whether that involvement is through a politically-oriented career, public service, or simply through staying in tune with today’s issues, BYUPAS aims to be a key resource to help its members gain a better understanding of U.S. and international politics.”
BYUPAS launched its first two chapters last week – the Washington, D.C. Chapter and Utah Chapter.
“Both chapters have done an excellent job in fulfilling the mission of BYUPAS,” continued Martin. “The D.C. Chapter has an outstanding networking event planned for May 6 and 7 titled Beyond BYU: Washington DC, while the Utah Chapter has events planned to help connect alumni to students on BYU campus. If you live in D.C. or Utah, you’ll want to join either of these two chapters and participate in their upcoming events.”
In addition to these two approved chapters, alumni are working to form chapters in Arizona, Idaho, California, Washington State, Colorado, the Northeast and even Europe. “We’ve been blown away by the number of people interested in seeing the Society succeed in their area,” added Martin. “BYUPAS is member-driven. Without the interest and abilities of Society members, BYUPAS would not be possible.”
